Indonesia is the  largest archipelago country in the world: 13 466 islands. Indonesia also is a maritime country. 70% of Indonesia (5.8 million km2) is the ocean. 30% is in the form of land (13 466 large and small islands) .with the total length of the Indonesian coastline is 99 093 kilometers (the second longest in the world after Canada). Indonesia's land area is 1.922.570 km² and spacious waters 3,257,483 km² with a population of over 258 million people (2016). The distance from Sabang (the most western point) to Merauke (the most eastern point): 8,514 km. To reach all areas that needs a lot of means of transportation, include land, sea, air and river. Marine transportation: containers, various types of ferries, passenger boats, sailboats and small boats motors.

In Indonesia there are approximately 2400 ports with various categories spread from Sabang to Merauke. The port has a number of activities such as loading and unloading of goods, as well as passenger transport. The Seaport comes as a symbol of the maritime world. It is an inter-island connector in the archipelago. The World Bank in 2014 recorded Indonesia's ranking in the seaport is ranked 74th out of 160 countries. For the next five years, the government is targeting the development of 24 international-scale ports with a budget of more than Rp 424T. Development of the 24 ports development is intended to be passed by commercial vessels with a capacity of 3,000-6,000.

Citing the 2014 World Economic Forum (WEF) report, the port in Indonesia ranks 6th out of 9 ASEAN countries. Global Competitive Index (GCI) 2013-2014 released by WEF, notes the quality of Indonesia's port infrastructure is ranked 89th out of 148 countries from the survey results. The rank is the lowest in terms of highway infrastructure (78) & airport infrastructure (68). More than 60% of the flow of export & import goods passes the port of Tanjung Priok, while port loading and unloading time in Indonesia mostly takes up to eight days. This subject is longer than the port in Thailand is five days & in Singapore one to two days.
